Even after decades of offering a variety of services and programs to those aged 50 and better, who live along the shoreline, many are still confused about who we are and what we really do. Here are the answers to a few of the questions frequently asked:

What towns do you service?
Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, as well as, Meals on Wheels in Madison.

How do I become a member? Are there membership fees?
We do not have membership fees or dues. Simply complete a registration form, and we will enter you into our database, and add you to our activity sheets. Donations are graciously accepted in lieu of a set fee.

But, I’m not a senior, can I still participate?
Our mission is to serve anyone aged 50 or better. Some grants apply only to those aged 60 and over, but all are welcome to participate. Participants’ ages range from the 50’s to the 90’s!

Doesn’t the government money pay for everything?
We do receive some funding from Title III grants, private grants, and the towns we service. However, they do not cover the basic expenses it costs to provide the many vital services to the community. Therefore, we rely on donations and fundraisers to help raise the money needed.

Why do I have to complete a registration form that asks for personal information?
The “pink form” is submitted as part of our grant requirements. Statistics are gathered to help prove the need for our funding. We do not sell or give out our database lists.

Are you a soup kitchen?
No! We have Café sites where lunch is served daily at noon.  Meals are partially funded with Title III funds, therefore anyone aged 60+, a donation of $3.00 is requested. For those under age 60, there is a cost of $6.25 for lunch. Our Old Saybrook location also serves breakfast on Saturdays from 8 am - Noon, for  a cost of $5.00 per person.

Are you an adult daycare center?
No! Everyone who participates at our center is fully independent. We do not have caretakers or residents who live here or provide assistance.

How do I get into your senior housing?
The senior housing located at Sheffield Street, is independent and not associated with the Estuary Council. Our Welcome Desk has a list of contacts for area housing.

What transportation is available?
Local transportation to the center is provided by the 9-Town Transit. They can be reached at 860-510-0429, or see their website on our Links page.

What is EMOTS?
Transportation to those aged 60 or better, living within the 9-Town Estuary Region, going to medical appointments beyond the 9-Town Estuary Region.

Can anyone shop in the Thrift Shop?
Yes! The shop is open to all ages to shop and enjoy the great bargains!

What donations do you accept at the Thrift Shop?
Clothing for all ages, coats, shoes, dishes, decorations, small furniture, craft items, puzzles, and more! We do NOT accept anything electronic or paperback books. Items should be in good condition and not broken.
